"While we were sitting, replete and cosy by the fire, unnamed heroes and heroines carried on the essential services that gave us our comfort and our safety."

BBC Television Newsreel pays tribute to the workers who kept Britain moving on Christmas Day.

A moment of thanks for the farmers, the milkmen, the newsagents, police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, bus, train, and tram drivers, the postal workers, scavengers, lifeguards and even the tireless BBC staff - like cameraman Mike Lewis, who filmed the very pictures you see here.

Originally broadcast 30 December, 1949.
