A few extracts from a peal on this spanking little Gillett and Johnston eight, cast in 1935. The peal took two attempts, because of… well, you’ll see! Needless to say, it resulted in a little trip upstairs to the bells, which are housed in two frames – 1,2,3,5 being hung above 4,6,7,8. You will hear on the exterior footage that these are the bells that “shout” a little on certain sides of the tower! The ringing room is basically a wooden cage, and is accessed by a steep wooden ladder from the church floor – there isn’t much space up there!

Campsall church is a lovely building, one of the oldest and most historic in Yorkshire. Begun in Norman times, it contains architectural features from virtually every period since. Legend has it that Robin Hood was married to Maid Marian here, in the little priest’s room photographed at 11:48. (This itself is well tucked away; one needs to ascend the tower stairs almost to the intermediate clock room before reaching it).

The observant amongst you will note that the two internal clips I used were taken around the same part of the peal (about 10 minutes in), just from the two different attempts! We definitely started the second run at a better, crisper speed – one of the trapdoors can’t have been put back properly either as the bells were louder, and the sixth (the offending bell from the first attempt!) “shouted” somewhat. Still, a lovely eight, which I would be very keen to peal again at some point!
