When it comes to children, self-expression and creativity are of paramount importance. Children of all ages love to engage in creative activities and express themselves. Your child begins communicating from the moment they are born, with that first cry announcing their arrival. 💞👶🏼

As they grow, we nurture their communication skills so they are capable of expressing themselves, clearly and confidently, in all aspects and areas of their life. 🎯

We all know the ability to communicate effectively is a critical life skill, and the better at it you are, the better your quality of life will be. 💝

The art of self-expression starts when your child can begin to identify and express their feelings, good and bad.

How we communicate with our children shapes how they can, in turn, communicate what they are feeling to us. 👨🏽‍👩🏽‍👧🏽‍👦🏽

Open-ended questions, like: “How are you feeling right now?” are great, but what if your child can’t describe their thoughts or feelings yet?

Instead of “use your words,” which many of us default to… let’s help them develop the language to describe their feelings.

Instead, try saying…

“Can you use other words to describe how you’re feeling?” 🤔

“Is there a sound you can make to help us think of a word?”

“Let’s think of a word that matches what you’re feeling...”

After all, younger children can’t “use their words” until we teach them helpful words to use.
