Residents of Damascus look ahead to vote

(11 Apr 2016) Syria will elect members of parliament on Wednesday for the first time in four years.
The vote has been criticised by the international community and the Syrian opposition as being biased in favour of President Bashar Assad's Ba'ath Party.
All of the nearly 12-thousand candidates are said to favour the Assad regime and the election will not be held in provinces under rebel or Islamic State group control.
Some people on the streets of Damascus rejected the criticism, with one man saying the Syrian people represented themselves and did not need anyone from the outside to tell them it was right or wrong.
Another said the election was not mandatory and he did not have to vote if he did not want to.
But it was, he said, "a duty for me to choose who should represent us in this parliament."
