"It is obvious that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to take steps and they have been talking about this, to continue adding fuel to the fire and provoking further escalation of tensions around this conflict. President Putin has already explained it very simply. Ukraine does not carry out these strikes. After all, the strikes are carried out by those countries that give permission, because the Ukrainian military does not acquire the targets and provide the maintenance. This is done by military specialists from these Western countries, and this fundamentally changes the modality of their involvement in the conflict. This is the danger and the provocative nature of this situation."
STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the decision authorizing the use of the US-supplied longer-range missiles by Ukraine to strike inside Russia will "add fuel to the fire" in the conflict.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied missiles to strike deeper inside Russia, according to a U.S. official and three other people familiar with the matter.

"It is obvious that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to take steps and they have been talking about this, to continue adding fuel to the fire and provoking further escalation of tensions around this conflict," Peskov said of the decision.

Peskov on Monday referred journalists to a statement made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in September, in which he said allowing Ukraine to target Russia would significantly raise the stakes in the conflict.

It would change “the very nature of the conflict dramatically,” Putin said at the time. “This will mean that NATO countries — the United States and European countries — are at war with Russia.”

Peskov claimed that Western countries supplying long-range weapons also provide targeting services to Kyiv.

“This fundamentally changes the modality of their involvement in the conflict,” Peskov said.
