Tarla Mehta: The Unsung Star of the Gandhi Sisters
While Bollywood remembers the legendary Dina Pathak, few know about her equally talented younger sister, Tarla Mehta. Born on April 30, 1935, in Pune, she was part of a forward-thinking family where all three daughters—Shanta, Dina, and Tarla—were encouraged to pursue education and the arts.
The eldest sister, Shanta Gandhi, became a theatrical powerhouse, later chairing institutions like the National School of Drama. Dina Pathak became an iconic actress, with memorable roles in classics like "Gol Maal" and "Bhavni Bhavai." The youngest, Tarla, chose a path of quiet but profound contribution, dedicating herself to both stage and screen.
Tarla's journey in the arts was unique. She was so passionate about theater that she went to London's Trinity College to study drama, a rare feat for an Indian woman at the time. After her studies, she returned to India and made a name for herself in both Gujarati and Hindi theater, exploring a wide range of genres from children's plays to social dramas.
Her film career began with Basu Chatterjee's "Sara Akash," and she went on to work with big names like Dharmendra in "Shola Aur Shabnam" and Dev Anand. Her talent was truly recognized on the international stage when she was cast as Sarojini Naidu in Richard Attenborough’s iconic film "Gandhi" (1982).
Despite her impressive resume, which also included roles in "Ghar," "Heat and Dust," and "Ek Chadar Maili Si," Tarla Mehta never achieved the same level of mainstream fame as her sister Dina. She also actively engaged in journalism, editing a magazine called "Movement," and ran the Sumitra Movie Club, as well as working on the radio.
On December 4, 2011, Tarla Mehta passed away, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire those who value substance over celebrity. Her story is a powerful reminder that some of the greatest contributions to art are made by those who stay just out of the spotlight.
