In this video, I evaluate the brand new GPT-5 Codex from OpenAI by testing it on my own web development project. I run it through three distinct challenges: a simple CSS style fix, a more involved database feature implementation for an admin panel, and finally, a complex feature implementation using the third-party Firecrawl API. Throughout the process, I compare its performance, speed, and approach to that of Anthropic's Claude Code, an AI tool I have extensive experience with. I found that while GPT-5 Codex is significantly slower, it tends to provide more accurate one-shot solutions, communicates in a more technical, developer-focused manner, and excels at guiding the user to provide the necessary context instead of making assumptions. I also share my appreciation for the Codex CLI's transparency regarding token usage, a feature I wish Claude had.
