⏰ Sleep is one of the human body’s basic needs. A good night's sleep should leave you feeling refreshed, alert, and ready to begin the day. According to science, the optimal range is 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

❌ Unfortunately, if you don’t get enough quality sleep, it might affect your long-term health and promote several age-related diseases. In this video, we’ll discuss some of these conditions and how you might protect yourself and slow down aging by getting a good night's sleep!

✅ NUMBER 1: SLEEP DEPRIVATION COULD PROMOTE HEART DISEASES
Several studies have found that sleeping too little or too much is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, which is one of the leading causes of death in the US. People who don’t get enough sleep were found to have a 48% higher risk of coronary heart disease, which is when the muscles in the heart cannot get enough oxygen because of blocked blood vessels. On the other hand, people who sleep too much were also affected, with a 38% higher risk of developing heart diseases and stroke. We do not fully understand why this relationship exists, but some studies suggest that it involves changes in the immune system.

✅ NUMBER 2: SLEEP DEPRIVATION COULD ACCELERATE BRAIN AGING
Dementia, especially Alzheimer’s Disease, is a serious problem and according to the CDC, Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th most common cause of death in the US, killing 121,000 annually. A long-term study examined participants’ sleep patterns at the ages of 50, 60, and 70 years, and found that sleeping too little significantly increases the risk of dementia at every age. The exact mechanism is still unknown, but one study found that just one night of sleep deprivation increased the levels of beta-amyloid proteins in certain brain regions. These beta-amyloid proteins have been associated with the development of Alzheimer’s Disease.

✅ NUMBER 3: SLEEP DEPRIVATION COULD PROMOTE METABOLIC DISORDERS
Sleeping too much or too little can contribute to Metabolic Syndrome, which is a cluster of five conditions: obesity, high blood sugar, hypertension, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides levels in the blood. Hormones released during deep sleep can help promote fat burning, so sleeping too little can contribute to this metabolic syndrome. Also, sleep deprivation increases the level of ghrelin, which is a hormone that regulates hunger. Sleeping less tends to make you hungrier the following day. Overall, poor sleep patterns make it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it, leading to further health issues.

✅ NUMBER 4: SLEEP DEPRIVATION COULD AFFECT YOUR SKIN
Sleep is important for the growth and renewal of skin cells. It’s why poor sleep quality accelerates skin aging and alters skin barrier function. Interestingly, good sleepers also reported a significantly better perception of their skin appearance compared with poor sleepers. Sleeping patterns may also affect skin healing. One study found that participants who slept better, getting at least 6 hours per night, could heal faster from damage to their skin.

These are just a few reasons why proper sleeping patterns are important for your health and the way you age. Despite the pressures of everyday life, sleep is a vital biological need and should not be neglected. So don’t forget to get a good night of sleep!
