This verse asks us to seriously consider the attitude of those who were given a portion of divine scripture—meaning the Jews and Christians who inherited the Torah and the Gospel. It is a profound observation about human nature and the rejection of truth.

God is addressing Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and through him, all believers: have you not considered the case of these people? They are possessors of a divine legacy, a treasure trove of past revelations. Yet, when they are invited to the complete and final Scripture of God, the Quran, so that it may judge between them—to resolve their theological differences, their legal disputes, or their disagreements about the true path—what is their response?

The expectation is that people of learning and faith would readily accept the judgment of God’s word, especially since their own scriptures foretold the coming of the final Prophet and the new revelation. However, the verse reveals a tragic reality: "a party of them turns away, and they are refusing." This turning away is not merely a disagreement; it is an active rejection born of obstinacy, pride, or a desire to cling to worldly authority and corrupted interpretations.

They are invited to the very source of guidance and justice, yet they stubbornly refuse its arbitration. This refusal shows that their true allegiance is not to the divine truth, but to their own customs, their established power structures, or their personal desires. The refusal to be judged by the clear light of God’s word reveals a deep-seated spiritual sickness. It suggests that they only adhere to the part of the Scripture that serves their interests, while ignoring the core message of submission and seeking divine justice. The irony is heavy: those who should be the first to recognize and accept the new revelation, based on the knowledge they already possess, become the most adamant in their denial. Their rejection is a willful act of refusal, stemming from a habit of turning away from inconvenient truths."
