Jesus Christ is the hope of Israel, just as He is our hope of eternal glory.

"O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters." - Jeremiah 17:13

The hope of Israel, Jesus, was forsaken because the people had formed a belief out of desperation - a need for a saviour that would deliver them from the Romans. They became blind to the arrival of the divine king. He was forsaken because his arrival did not suit their situation.
