A restaurant owner’s comments on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on food prepared in eateries has gone viral. The comments were made in the presence of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at an event hosted in her honour in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Srinivasan, owner of the Annapoorna chain of restaurants and also the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Federation, raised the challenges faced by restaurants due to different GST rates on food items. “For sweets the GST input is 5%, for ‘kaaram’ it is 12%. In bakery except bread and bun, for everything else it goes up to 28%”, said the restaurateur. Srinivasan’s speech turned viral with many questioning the existing GST slabs. Later, another video showed Srinivasan meeting the finance minister and clarifying his comments. The minister addressed the issue in a subsequent press meeting, saying Srinivasan was a long-time businessman whose poser she did not address at the event. She emphasised that the government was taking all measures to smoothen the GST process and that every state was involved in the process via the GST Council.
