Mid-day meets the local conservation volunteers steering a turtle protection programme along the coast of Maharashtra and how it's about to be powered by data thrown up by satellite tags fitted on five Olive Ridleys' backs

Nestled adjacent to the beautiful beach on one side and the picturesque mountains on the other side, Velas is a coastal village in the Ratnagiri district with a population of just 225 families. This may surprise you but once infamous for eating turtle eggs due to lack of knowledge, the Velas village has become a role model for the Olive Ridley Turtle Conservation work.

Five Olive Ridley Turtles were fitted with satellite tags to track their movements for the first time on Maharashtra's west coast. The information obtained from the satellite tags is shedding light on the turtles' secretive lives. The data obtained from the tags will aid researchers and officials from the forest department in developing more effective conservation methods. #navigatingthewild #oliveridley #velas #ranjeetjadhav #velasturtlefestival
