Chapter 2 of "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky continues to follow the main protagonist, Raskolnikov, as he navigates the dark, impoverished streets of Saint Petersburg.

Marmeladov's story of despair and hopelessness has a profound effect on Raskolnikov, further deepening his own existential crisis. He leaves their home feeling a complex mix of revulsion and compassion.

The chapter further establishes the themes of poverty, despair, and the moral degradation of society. It also shows Raskolnikov's empathy towards those even less fortunate than himself, offering a glimpse into his complicated character.
