Her Instagram feed is filled with pictures of her glamorous life, and her TikTok features videos of her giving life advice to her thousands of followers.

But she’s not real, and is instead an AI-generated social media influencer.

On the surface, her content seems harmless, but concerns are being raised about how these influencers could be used in the future.

Sociologist and accredited futurist Dr Ben Hamer had a lot of questions about Olivia, telling Yahoo Lifestyle, “What’s the agenda? Who’s built it? Who’s pushing it and who serves to benefit from it? That’s where I think it could get quite malicious.”

Dr Hamer warned that these AI avatars are building massive followings online by dishing out motivational quotes and promoting aspirational lifestyles as if they’re a trusted authority, even though they’re not real.

He added that the people who control these influencers could get them to say anything.

He said, “Once you’ve got your following, you can slowly radicalise. And that’s where it can become really dangerous.”

Lisa Main specialises in the impact of AI on our information environment and told Yahoo Lifestyle that radicalisation can take only eight weeks.
She said, “I'm not suggesting that this is being weaponised for radicalisation at the moment, but we just don't know how it's going to be used.”
Lisa warned that people can be very easily influenced when scrolling on social media and these AI influencers could be deployed in a range of ways, some of which could be “dangerous”.
