World Philosophy Day 2023: Simone Weil | Attention brings Love

Welcome to 'Philosophy Live'
- this week we are broadcasting on Thursday as it's World Philosophy Day.

Dr Graham Blackbourn speaks about Simone Weil, and in particular her words on attention.

" Attention consists of suspending our thought, leaving it detached, empty and ready to be penetrated by the object... Above all our thought should be empty, waiting, not seeking anything, but ready to receive in its naked truth the object which is to penetrate it."

" Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light which is in exact proportion to them will flood the soul. Every effort adds a little gold to a treasure which no power on earth can take away."



Each Friday during the term a tutor from the Practical Philosophy course will present a philosophic gem which we hope will be of interest. Each session will be around 10-15 minutes long. Whether you have attended philosophy classes or not, all are welcome. The live sessions are recorded and can be watched at any time on the School of Philosophy and Economic Science’s Facebook page and here on YouTube. The views expressed in these live videos are the personal view of the tutors rather than the School of Philosophy and Economic Science.

The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.
