The Gerber Job File has five different sections or to use the correct JSON terminology, five different objects or arrays.

The first object, the Header, contains information only about the Gerber Job File itself, such as its creation date.

The second, the GeneralSpecs, is the only part of the Gerber Job File which must be present for any JSON format file to be considered a Gerber Job File, even if it contains no internal information. Most of the pertinent information surrounding the fabrication of a PCB are placed here. Though the properties within this section are not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged that the LayerNumber property, which represents the number of copper layers, be included.

The third, the MaterialStackup, is an array and describes the stackup of the job and is designed to provide further details on each layer. These layers must be in order, their type must be included and all the layers of the job have to be included in the stackup regardless of whether any extra information is needed for that layer. But generally the more detail included here the better. The DesignRules array seen here, is where any design rules can be given by layer category (inner or outer).

Finally, there is the FileAttribute array which is simply a convenient place to save information about the image data files and their attributes pertaining to the job.

It should be noted that all measurement information inside the Gerber Job File is considered to be in mm.
