The City of Hamilton has completed the expansion of the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant, adding to their continual efforts to improve local water quality.

Mayor Andrea Horwath was joined by MP Filomena Tassi, MPP Donna Skelly, Ward 4 Councillor Tammy Hwang and other dignitaries and City of Hamilton staff to officially cut the ribbon and announce the completion of the expansion on Friday.

The Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 700 Woodward Ave., is Hamilton’s main wastewater treatment facility, cleaning approximately 96 per cent of the city’s total wastewater.

The City received $100 million each from the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to put towards a total cost of approximately $340 million for the project.

Work began in May 2017 to update the sewage treatment plant from a secondary to a tertiary treatment facility, which adds a third more advanced and rigorous level of treatment.

The project also included the following:

Construction of a new raw sewage pumping station
Electrical system upgrades
Enhancements to the Red Hill Valley Creek
Upgrades to the south secondary treatment plant process
Over a 10-year period, the project will prevent 500 tonnes of phosphorus from entering Hamilton Harbour.

The plant returns about 350 million litres of water to the Hamilton Harbour each day, which is equivalent to 140 Olympic sized swimming pools.
