From one curve to another, and arguably a more famous one. As U245 continued its climb towards the summit, we followed and made our way down to Mance, home of 'Pennsylvania's other Horseshoe Curve'. The setting may be more pastoral and less heavily-trafficked than its Pittsburgh Line counterpart, but the grade is no less fierce. Our first train was in listening range well before visual, due at least in part to the summer foliage blocking our view to the east. At 2:20, ES40DC 5327 and ES44AH 846 emerged from behind the trees as they fought their way to the summit with Q135; no pushers, natch. A half hour later, U245 put in another appearance as ES44AH 742 and AC4400CW 453 now entered a second battle with gravity as they led their charges in a careful descent towards Cumberland. At 3:37 (and taking us by surprise), C40-8Ws 7811 and 7833 returned from the west, running light, having passed earlier in the day on the rear of Q217 (see 'Glade In The Shade'). Our scanners had no news to tell of any approaching trains, so we said our goodbyes to the Keystone Sub - and the very lucky owners of the former post office/now private residence on the inside of the curve.
