CCTV captures moment 'random' woman stabbed at the checkout

A man taken into police custody following a fatal stabbing in Sydney’s west escaped care while he was being transferred between hospitals 10 days ago, it has been revealed.

One man died and another two people were critically wounded in the horror daylight attack at Merrylands on Tuesday morning.

Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed the man absconded from care while being transferred from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital’s emergency department on February 7.

“The District is aware a person alleged to be involved in the incident is a recent patient of Cumberland Hospital, which provides acute inpatient care for people with complex mental health needs,” a spokesperson said.

“NSW Police were notified, and contact was made with the patient’s family, but all attempts by WSLHD to contact the person were unsuccessful.

“A formal review into the person’s care and treatment will be undertaken, which will include an external senior psychiatrist.”

The department expresses its sympathies to the families, victims and first responders of the confronting and deeply distressing incident.
