Welcome to my vlog about the Royal Antler Hotel, also called the Sands Hotel before its demolition in 2004. It was originally built as the Royal Narrabeen Hotel in the 1920s on the site of an earlier hotel. In the 1960s it became the Royal Antler Hotel and was a famous and popular venue for live music in the 1970s and 1980s. Renovations in 1987 continued a smaller hotel has since been built at the southern end of the site which opened in 2007.

I was interested to see what had become of this legendary venue and wanted to chat about the great memories from people that might have attended gigs, as well as musicians stories about their time playing at the Royal Antler. Rob Hirst, the drummer from Midnight Oil, held an exhibition in Manly where he re-created a booth with screens and loud speakers showing bands that played at the Antler and basically replicated what it was like to be at one of those gigs, from sticky beer stained carpet to hot sweaty crowds. A fantastic effort. Midnight Oil recorded a live gig at the Royal Antler in the 1980s and by all accounts their shows were incredible. Like many other venues in Sydney, the Antler was a fantastic music establishment that to this day , still holds treasured memories for countless music lovers.
