Lava runs down from Mount Merapi's crater as volcanic activity increases, as seen from Tunggularum village in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia, on September 19, 2024. The volcanic activity increased from about 11 p.m. on Wednesday to Thursday morning, unleashing clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava, and gas that traveled up to one kilometer (1.06 miles) down its slopes.

The 2,968-meter (9,737-foot) mountain is about 30 km (18 miles) from the Yogyakarta city center. About a quarter-million people live within a 10-kilometer (6-mile) radius of the volcano. Merapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of some 280,000 residents. After showing renewed activity, the volcano's alert status has remained at the second-highest level since 2020.
