Waikiki (Hawaiian: vɐiˈkiːˈkiː or wɐiˈkiːˈkiː) is the name of an area in Honolulu, Hawaii. This area is known as a tourist area and a settlement with a beach called Waikiki Beach. It is located on the southern side of the island of Oahu. The Waikiki area stretches between the Ala Wai Channel on the west and north to Diamond Head (Lēʻahi) on the east. The name Waikiki means fresh water gushing in Hawaiian for the springs that flow in the area, and once separated Waikiki from the interior. Waikiki has long been known as a tourist destination. In the 1800s, Waikiki was already a resting place for members of the Hawaiian Royal Family.

Today, the Waikiki settlement and beach have become the center of the tourism industry in Hawaii. In the Waikiki area there are luxury hotels and resorts, such as the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Halekulani hotel, Hyatt Regency Waikiki, and Sheraton Waikiki. Among the hotels in Waikiki there are historic hotels built in the early 20th century, such as: Moana Surfrider Hotel and Royal Hawaiian Hotel).

Waikiki Beach is a beach that is crowded with tourists. From the beach you can see the view of the inactive Diamond Head volcano. Waikiki Beach is actually not very wide, and half of it is a surfing area. Until a little further out to sea, the water is rather shallow. On the seabed there are many corals, so people must be careful when setting foot. Waikiki's waves are quite large, especially during the strong wind season. Surfing in Waikiki is famous for its waves that are ideal for long boarding, tandem surfing, and also for beginner surfers. Waikiki Beach holds many events throughout the year including surfing competitions, art performances, hula dancing and outrigger canoe races. Waikiki Beach has long had problems with erosion, so a breakwater and beach expansion program were built. In the 1920s and 1930s, the sand on Waikiki Beach was supplemented with sand transported by ships and barges from Manhattan Beach, California. Imports of sand were stopped in the 1970s and local officials looked for ways to maintain the remaining sand from the onslaught of the tides. Since 2001, Waikiki Beach has often shown free movies. Tourists can watch movies shown on a 10-meter wide screen. The film screening event at Waikiki Beach is called Sunset on the Beach. In Waikiki there are also many historical places, such as Kapiolani Park, Fort de Russy Military Reservation, Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kuhio Beach Park, and Ali Wai Harbor.
