This is a sample lesson from the Secret Guitar Teacher site (see link above). It is aimed at beginner to intermediate players.

Here’s the abridged transcript:

A great many pop tunes have been based on the 12-bar blues sequence. This is a real classic written by Lee Hazlewood who also produced the 1966 recording sung by Nancy Sinatra which went to number one on both sides of the Atlantic. The original was played by a whole band, but here’s my version, adapted to just one guitar. I’m playing it on the acoustic, but it works just fine on the electric guitar as well.

Let’s look at the intro first. We are going to emulate the opening bass run by starting on E at the 12th fret and working down one fret at a time with this three note rhythm. All the way until we get to fret 5 which is hit just once before jumping to a slight bend on fret 3 and landing on the open E to launch straight into the E chord.

It’s up to you then how long to keep strumming the E chord before starting the vocals. I usually let it run a couple of bars. Once the vocals start you are into the 12 bar sequence.

The song has a sort of sixteen beat rock rhythm. Try to emphasise the upbeats like this. Looking at the chord sequence, first eight bars are what you would expect from a 12 bar. Four bars of E two of A then back to E, but then the last line is a bit different – Half a bar on G – half a bar of E – repeated twice. Holding the final E to emphasise the vocal punchline .Then I segue back into the intro bass run to act as a turnaround between verses.

So that’s about it. Have a bit of fun with that – it’s a great one to play at parties!

See you in the next lesson
