Spain and France met in the opening game of Day 2 in the Men's Hockey World League in Rotterdam. As expected the Spanish side were too strong, despite a spirited French performance, and won 4-2.
With Spain ranked ten places above France in the world standings, it was always going to be a tough game for the French. The first half saw Spain dominate the game and in a 5 minute scoring spree, go 3-0 up.
The first goal was a moment of magic as David Alegre set off from halfway, outpacing the French defence and unleashed a wicked reverse shot which shot through the legs of Martin Zylbermann.
Their other two goals were almost identical. Both came from penalty corners, and both really should have been saved with Martin Zylbermann beaten through the legs for the second time from Andres Mir to make it 3-0.
The second half started short of chances for either side until France had a superb chance to get a goal back after Simon Martin Brisac missed a golden oppurtunity at the near post.
But they got their goal shortly after as Viktor Lockwood latched onto Matthieu Durchons drag back to fire past Quico Cortes and make it 3-1.
That triggered Spain into life. With France still celebrating, the Spanish burst down field and scored through Roc Oliva's powerful reverse shot. 4-1 and Spain were back in control.
France drew a goal back in similar fashion to the their first. Gaspard Baumgarten set up Viktor Lockwood to score his, and France's second, to make it 4-2.
But Spain were able to hold off their rivals and keep their two goal lead. 4-2 the final score.
