Alba Iulia is one of Romania's most overlooked sights. Thi.s travel gem in Transylvania boasts a star-shaped citadel, magnificently preserved walls, grand buildings, monuments and museums, impressive churches, and ancient archaeological treasures.

Alba Iulia was once an important political, economic and social centre of the Dacia (that area which is now Romania). After Dacia become a province of the Roman Empire, it became the largest city in Roman Dacia. Today, you can still see the Roman influences in its architecture and town planning from thousands of years ago.

In the later ages, Alba Iulia came under control of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom. Years later in the early 18th century, when it fell under the Hapsburg Empire, the Austrians built a large citadel that could resist Ottoman invasions. Each empire and culture left its mark, ultimately forming the beautiful Romanian city we see today.

Alba Iulia is a worthy stop on any trip to Romania, particularly if you’re travelling from Sibiu towards the Hunedoara and Deva castles, or up to the buzzing city of Cluj-Napoca and the mesmerising Apuseni Mountains.
