Born in orthodox Bengal family – well versed in Indian and European languages – oriental and western learning – studied scriptures of islam and christainity and oneness of God
Condemned rituals and caste based discrimination
Indian teaching to coexist with western education
Western science as rational and scientific rather than blind belief of priest
1828 – founded Brahmo Samaj to purify and reform Hinduism
Published Bengali translation of Vedas and principles of Upanishads
Opposed idol worship, caste system and one god
1829 – Lord William Bentinck banned Sati - women rights, against polygamy and child marriage, widow remarriage and inheritance rights
Supported western education and started school in Calcutta
Helped David Hare open Hindu College at Calcutta – later presidency college
1825 – founded Vedanta college for western and indian learning
