UER II, also known as Urban Extension Road II, is a 75.7 km long, 6-lane expressway being constructed in Delhi NCR. It is designed to be a third ring road for Delhi, connecting major national highways (NH1, NH2, NH8, and NH10) and enhancing connectivity to areas like Dwarka, Najafgarh, and Rohini. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Outer Delhi and the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) and improve connectivity to parts of Delhi and NCR, including Gurugram and Chandigarh.
Key aspects of UER II:
Route and Alignment:
UER II spans 75.7 km, with 54.21 km in Delhi and 21.5 km in Haryana. It connects NH44 at Alipur, passing through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, and terminates at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near Mahipalpur.
Significance:
It aims to decongest Delhi by acting as a bypass for major highways and providing faster connectivity to IGI Airport and other parts of the NCR.
Progress and Timeline:
While initially planned for completion in 2020, the project faced delays. However, recent reports indicate that the project is nearing completion, with some sections already operational and others in the final stages of completion. The project is expected to be fully operational by August 2025 according to the Hindustan Times.
Features:
UER II includes multiple underpasses, elevated viaducts, flyovers, bridges, and ramps. It is also designed to be an e-highway, potentially using overhead power lines to provide electricity to moving vehicles according to Swarajyamag.
Benefits:
UER II is expected to reduce travel time, improve regional connectivity, and ease traffic congestion in Delhi and surrounding areas. It also opens up access to previously underserved areas of Delhi.
Funding and Development:
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is funding the Delhi section of the project, while the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for construction.
