For Jung (and he did a lot of work with dream interpretation, even outlining certain principles for us when interpreting dreams), dream interpretation is a first baby step into the realm of the unconscious. Dream analysis, for Jung, was something to be surpassed with active imagination. Moreover, the specific problems he found with it concerned its necessarily passive nature (contrasted with the "active" nature of active fantasy/imagination), and its reliance on a psychoanalyst or doctor in maybe, maybe not reaching any kind of permanent, meaningful problem resolution. Put simply, it is passive and relies on the insights of another rather than oneself.

Jung, not I, brings up active imagination, and that is why I spend time discussing it in relation to dream interpretation. Engaging the conscious mind during the fantasy as well as being both experienced and understood by the "patient" as Jung refers to them, resolves the issues previously listed. Put even more simply, you should be the one to actively explore, understand, analyze, interpret, and to experience your own unconscious mind.
