Parrot First Aid: Quick Tips for Emergencies

Parrots can be delicate creatures, and emergencies require quick action. Here are some essential first-aid tips to help stabilize your bird before reaching a vet.


1. Assess the Situation

Stay calm and observe your parrot’s condition.

Move them to a quiet, warm area to minimize stress.

Handle them gently—excessive handling can cause shock.


2. Common Emergencies & First Aid

Bleeding (Broken Blood Feather or Injury)

Apply gentle pressure with sterile gauze.

Use cornstarch or styptic powder to stop bleeding (avoid too much).

Do not pull out a broken blood feather unless necessary—seek vet care.


Shock (Weak, Fluffed Up, Unresponsive)

Keep the bird warm (use a heating pad on low, covered with a towel).

Keep the environment quiet and stress-free.

Offer water but do not force-feed.


Broken Bone or Fracture

Restrict movement by placing the bird in a small padded box.

Do not attempt to splint or wrap the injury yourself—get vet help ASAP.


Seizures (Twitching, Falling, Losing Balance)

Dim the lights and reduce noise.

Keep the bird safe from falls or injury.

After a seizure, keep them warm and get vet assistance.


Poisoning (Chewing Toxic Plants, Chemicals, or Heavy Metals)

Remove the toxin source immediately.

Do not induce vomiting.

Offer fresh water and rush to the vet.


Burns (Hot Surface, Water, or Electrical Burns)

Run lukewarm (not cold) water over the burn.
