In these uncertain economic times with business slowing it can be challenging to stay profitable even when you have cut costs to the bone.

Sometimes it can help to take a different approach and look at what worked in the past.

The economy in the late 1970s had many similarities with today

At the time Philip Crosby wrote a book called Quality is Free.

Research showed that on average 20% of a companies annual turnover was spent correcting mistakes and doing things again.

So a company with a £3,000,000 turnover could be spending over £600,000 just fixing mistakes.

Crosby worked out that if employees could be encouraged to pay more attention to detail and work towards doing things 100% right first time, then the money saved would have a massive impact on the companies bottom line.

Even a small 10% improvement would add £60,000 to a companies profit. Hence the title Quality is Free!
