In this video I explain the basics of working with E V A foam. I talk about how to cut it, shape it, add some texture, glue pieces of it together, and seal it. I also describe the various products I have used to seal foam.

Contact cement is one of the best ways to glue foam pieces together. Simply apply a thin layer to both surfaces you want to attach. Wait for the glue to dry. This can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. When the glue isn't shiny it's time to connect your pieces. Press your pieces together. CONTACT CEMENT IS EXTREMELY TOXIC! Do not breathe it into your lungs! Make sure to work on a well ventilated area! Wear a respirator!

Plastidip is one of the most commonly used sealers. It's basically spray on rubber in a can. It comes out of the can in rather large particles. You can minimize this by warming up your plastidip. Put the can in some warm water for about 10 minutes. This will produce a much finer spray. You'll want to spray on at least 4 layers to get a smooth even finish. However, it does have one significant disadvantage. Plastidip is not sandable. You'll be stuck with whatever texture it adds.

Mod podge is another option. It's a pva glue that you can apply with a sponge brush, paint brush, or roller. It also comes in a spray on version (I haven't used that particular option). Simply apply a thin, even coat and wait for it to dry. This can take 30 minutes to an hour. Then apply another layer. Use as many layers as you want, just make sure each layer has dried before adding anther one.
Mod podge can be lightly sanded as well as wet sanded. Just wait 24 hours before any sanding. If you want to wet sand mod podge start with a 400 grit sand paper and increase the grit as far as desired. Use caution however. You can easily wet sand through all of the mod podge.

Rapid Fill and Fine Finish is a two part sealing process. Rapid Fill is applied first. Use paint brush with soft bristles to vigorously scrub it into the foam. Then you can smooth it out. Then let it dry. This can take about an hour. Or the drying process can be hurried up by using a hair dryer. Once the first layer is dry apply a second coat. Apply a third coat if desired. You can sand Rapid Fill if you want. I typically start with 220 grit and written my way up to 320 grit sand paper. It's best to do this by hand. A power tool would likely sand all the way through the Rapid Fill.
Then you can add Fine Finish. Use a soft bristle paint brush to apply a thin layer. Let it dry and add another coat. Apply as many coats as desired. Just allow for dry time between applications. Fine Finish can be wet sanded after it is allowed to dry for 24 hours. I start with 400 grit sand paper and work my way up to the desired smoothness (sometimes up to 2400 grit).
