Eastern yellow robins (Eopsaltria australis) are a familiar bird found along the south and eastern Australian coast from the Victorian/South Australian border through to the Cairns region of Cape York.

They are well known for their habit of perching on the side of tree trunks, or low hanging branches, and watching for arthropod prey which they then swoop down to grab.

I was fortunate enough to get some good footage of this one today just having a rest - although it was still opportunistically watching out for any insects which it occasionally dropped down to get.

They prefer eucalypt and rainforest habitats but have adapted well to parks and gardens. In the Toowoomba area they usually come up over the range in winter and this one seems to be visiting my yard just a little early - not sure what that might mean!
