ABBA is a Swedish pop group, composed of Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog, active in 1972-1982. The name “ABBA” is an acronym formed by the first letters of each member (Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid). The quartet formed in Stockholm in 1972, but only gained international fame after winning the 1974 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. Since then, ABBA has gained popularity by employing captivating rhythms in their songs, with simple lyrics and a unique sound, characterized by the harmony of the female voices and the wall of sound technique, an effect created by the music producer Phil Spector. Björn and Agnetha married months before the formation of the quartet, while Benny and Frida married only in 1978; the four dealt with artistic obligations at the same time as they occupied themselves with their new families. Their recordings had a commercial impact, which led the group to become the most successful of the Universal Music Group label, and the band that sold the most records in the 1970s. ABBA was the first European pop group to be successful in English-speaking countries outside Europe,[2] mainly in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and, to a lesser extent, in the United States. However, at the height of their popularity, the two marriages were dissolved and these changes were reflected in their music, writing deeper lyrics with a different musical style. The group experienced a commercial decline, which eventually led to the decision to end the group, so that in December 1982 the last appearance of the quartet occurred. After a time out of public interest, in the 1990s several compilation albums were released that enabled the group’s return to the top of the charts. On April 27, 2018, ABBA announced an official return with new songs for the first time in 35 years and a tour for the first half of 2019, confirming, thus, the fact of being considered one of the most successful groups in the world, whose sales of their albums are estimated at 400 million worldwide. Their songs were performed by various artists, as well as being the basis of the musical Mamma Mia!. The group is an icon in their country of origin, as well as an important figure in the expansion of europop. Their popularity opened the doors for other groups of the same genre, a fact that culminated in the group’s entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
