This is the X-15, the fastest plane in the U.S. Airforce.
The rocket-powered hypersonic jet, which is manufactured by North American Aviation Inc, still holds the title of fastest manned aircraft.
The 50 foot long plane features a pointed nose cone, forward-set single-seat cockpit, and distinctive tubular fuselage To protect the aircraft from high temperatures, the body has a nickel-chrome alloy covering with an ablative coating.
Its rocket engine consumes so much fuel, the plane has to be air launched from a B-52 aircraft at approximately 45,000 feet in the air, with the B-52 already going upwards of 500 miles per hour.
On October 3, 1967, Air Force Major William “Pete” Knight flew the rocket-powered aircraft, reaching a record speed of 4,520 miles per hour, which is more than six times the speed of sound! This set a new highest speed ever recorded by crewed aircraft and the record still stands to this day!
