Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited Chapter One, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s new boutique bookshop in Glasgow, to learn more about the charity’s work and its latest venture.

Chapter One, which opened at the end of October in Trongate, was made possible thanks to a £20,000 grant from Glasgow City Council’s Meanwhile Use Fund, designed to revitalise the city centre. Chapter One has already created two jobs and a range of volunteering opportunities.

Funds raised at the store will help Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland support the one in five people across Scotland living with a chest, heart or stroke condition or Long Covid. 

Jane-Claire Judson, Chief Executive of Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Nicola Sturgeon to Chapter One and showcase our first bookshop.

“Visits like this are also crucial for us to highlight the vital work we do to support people across Scotland living with a chest, heart or stroke condition or Long Covid, and their families. Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is committed to reaching 175,000 people living with its conditions across Scotland by 2028 through its Community Healthcare Support Services, which allow people to live life to the full based on what matters most to them.

“Shops like Chapter One play a vital role in raising funds to make this possible.”

Nicola Sturgeon, MSP for Glasgow Southside, said: “As a massive book lover and supporter of CHSS, I am delighted to be visiting this exciting and innovative venture.

“Chapter One is a wonderful addition to the community, and it’s inspiring to see it paired with the vital work CHSS does across the country.

“Their commitment to supporting people living with chest, heart and stroke conditions is life-changing, and I’m proud to help highlight their ambition to reach even more people by 2028.”

Chapter One is on the lookout for volunteers and donations of unwanted books. Anyone with donations can bring them to the store seven days a week from 10am to 5pm at 16 Trongate, Glasgow, G1 5ES. 

Every book donated and sold helps fund vital services for people living with chest, heart and stroke conditions across Scotland.
