How Do We Get There: Becoming a Trauma Sensitive School

All children and staff need to feel safe, welcomed and supported at school.

How we become a trauma sensitive school is not about a list of things we have to do. How we get there starts with what’s important to us. What is our urgency as a school and how do we address that? What actions do we take?

The key to creating a safe and supportive school community is identifying the urgencies that your school has and then taking small, but effective steps to address them, aligned with a set of norms and values that are articulated in we what we call the Attributes.

These Attributes are:
• Understanding the impact of trauma on student learning.
• Supporting students needs in the 4 Domains (Whole Child): competence, self regulation, relationships and physical health and well being.
• Helping students to feel safe and valued: socially, emotionally, physically, academically.
• Connecting students to the school community.

A Trauma Sensitive School:
• Encourages teamwork and coordination among staff, parents, outside agencies and others.
• Is flexible and innovative to ever changing demands. Is is adaptable and will to take a risk.
• It infuses all of these values in the daily operation of the school.
