Awarded in the fifty-eighth Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Suzi Eszterhas’ image Sloth Dilemma highlights her work with Dr Rebecca Cliffe, Founder and Executive Director of The Sloth Conservation Foundation (SloCo) in Costa Rica. The image raises awareness of the challenges facing urban sloths as well as the work of SloCo to safeguard the future of these amazing creatures.

Costa Rica is considered to be one of the best places in the world to see sloths - you’re almost guaranteed to see one if you visit. This might seem great, but it’s actually a sign of a major problem. As rainforests reduce in size due to deforestation, sloths no longer have access to the habitats they need for survival and are being forced to live in increasingly urban environments.

Powerful images are essential tools in raising awareness and generating support and funds for wildlife conservation. Collaborations between science and art are important for creating impact and change.
