Who we are and what we want to produce
Veritas Editions is an independent publisher of photographic art paired with narrative, presented in book form, prints or portfolios. Please have a look at our website here to get a feel for what we do.
We have begun a new Fine Press Edition featuring the lifework of Paul Caponigro. The genre of Fine Press Edition is somewhat rare and most people have never seen one - they are more elusive than the category of photobooks, typically residing in the Special Collections area of libraries and other institutions. For examples of each, have a look here at recent Veritas Editions-produced Photobooks and Fine Press books.
Highlights of the Fine Press Edition
While we would love to show you a full mock-up, we are simply at too early a stage to show anything physical. More importantly, we can show some of the images chosen for the book - see below in the Reward Description details.

Why this project now?
Without a doubt, Paul Caponigro is a living icon in the world of photographic art. He has been widely exhibited and written about, but never in the genre of a Fine Press Edition. Now is the time.
We first noticed the art of Paul in the late 1990's when a print of "Two Pears" appeared in a west-coast exhibition. The image was (and still is) captivating. Fast forward a couple of decades, when we approached Paul in the Summer of 2020 at his home/studio/darkroom in rural Cushing, Maine and showed our latest Fine Press Edition, Cavalo Lusitano, The Spirit Within. Paul, like most people, had not see a Fine Press Edition before. He was intrigued by the possibilities. We are very grateful he accepted the invitation, and he is deeply engaged in the project as we continue in image printing, design and text.
Janet Russek and David Scheinbaum noticed Paul much earlier, and got to know him quite well in his 25 years living in Santa Fe where they have a gallery. Janet and David have this to say about Paul:
There are some people that emit power – their energy and life force pour out like the rays of the sun. Paul is one of those rare people!
Paul Caponigro is regarded as one of the foremost photographers of our time. His works blend his deep spiritual sensibility with a mastery of his darkroom technique. He and his art are inseparable. As he looks deeper into himself while defining his own vision he also looks deeper into his subjects to produce his transformational imagery, that are highly charged with emotion and mystery. Caponigro’s works define Minor White’s statement, “The camera records superbly, but transforms better”.
Looking back over the years, our times with Paul discussing thoughts and theories about life, art and music, over a cup of coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, have been one of the highlights of our years in Santa Fe as friends, photographers, and gallerists.
Design and Production Plans
The design effort is presently only about 10% done. Core concepts and elements have been discussed but not even mocked up on paper yet. We have chosen our production partners based on the skill set needed as well as past performance. Every Veritas Editions book has won significant awards in the art photography book category. Projects like this are a collaborative effort, similar in concept to the African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child". These editions are indeed like our children in many ways - we take great care in raising them and then we turn them loose into the world.
Production for the Fine Press is planned to begin in April and finish up by August. A scare 25 numbered, 12 lettered, and 1 Hors de Commerce books are planned. Each one will be a work of art in its own right, as well as containing original art in the form of Paul Caponigro prints.
Reward fulfilment for you, our backers, will take place August - October, 2021, depending on the completion of the reward(s) that you choose.
