Did you know that the concept of an airplane was written about seven thousand years ago by the Indian Vedic sage Bharadwaja in one of his scriptures? Based on this concept, in the nineteenth century, an Indian Vedic scholar, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, built the world's first unmanned aircraft, even before the Wright brothers. It is believed that Bharadwaja was a highly respected sage of the Vedic era, and his ashram was located in present-day Prayag, Uttar Pradesh.
In this ashram, he conducted research on various subjects like Ayurveda, genetics, human embryo formation, and Sanskrit grammar, creating numerous texts such as the Bharadwaja Shiksha and Ayurveda Samhita. For these reasons, Sage Bharadwaja is also called a Maharishi.
One of the most significant contributions of Maharishi Bharadwaja to modern science and technology is the Viman Samhita. This text explains the technology of building aircraft with three thousand shlokas, eight chapters, one hundred topics, five hundred principles, and numerous drawings. His civilization also reveals that Bharadwaja had knowledge of changes in the ecosystem over the ages,
and he designed aircraft accordingly. Mantric Aircraft: It mentions more than twenty-five mantric aircraft that flew with the power of mantras during the Treta Yuga, one of which was Ravana's Pushpaka Vimana. Tantric Aircraft: In the Dwapara Yuga, it describes more than fifty-six tantric aircraft that flew with the power of special devices or tantras, such as the Saubha Vimana mentioned in the Mahabharata. Kritika Aircraft: For the current Kali Yuga, Maharishi Bharadwaja wrote about Kritika aircraft powered by powerful engines. Among the twenty-five Kritika aircraft, three interesting ones are Sundara, Shakuna, and Rukma.
**Sundara Vimana**: The power source of the Sundara Vimana was solar energy, with engines using five gases, exhaust pipes, furnaces, and wheels.
**Rukma Vimana**: The Rukma Vimana, futuristic in design, incorporated techniques invented after the eighteenth century, like cylinder pistons and pumps. Poles and wheels under the aircraft rotated with buttons and switches, enabling flight.
**Shakuna Vimana**: Shakuna Vimanas were made of Raj Loha metal, heat-resistant, with detailed descriptions of the aircraft's base, long mast, wheels, and a large dome. It also included a mercury-based control system to steer the aircraft.
Studying these aircraft designs, Indian Vedic scholar Shivkar Bapuji Talpade built the world's first unmanned aircraft in 1895. This aircraft was flown to a height of 1,500 feet at Bombay's Chowpatty Beach, eight years before the Wright brothers' flight. However, the British suppressed this invention from reaching the world. Thus, Talpade's invention and Maharishi Bharadwaja's knowledge faded into the pages of history. In 2017, an American aeronautical engineer, Travis Taylor, technically validated Maharishi Bharadwaja's designs, stating that the aircraft design was perfectly aerodynamic. Ancient India used iron engines, technology, and mercury as fuel in aircraft, and using the same technology, NASA successfully launched its first spacecraft, Surveyor, in 1964. While the world today only dreams of flying cars and space tourism, great Indian Maharishi Bharadwaja created that future thousands of millennia ago through his civilization.
