On July 25, 2025, a group of 54 children, mostly Moroccan nationals, swam from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in dangerous conditions marked by dense fog and rough seas. Approximately 30 adults accompanied them, making the perilous crossing together. The Spanish Civil Guard was deployed to rescue swimmers, some of whom managed to reach shore unaided. All children were taken to temporary reception centers in Ceuta, which local authorities say are already overwhelmed. Ceuta, along with Melilla, is one of the European Union’s only land borders with Africa and regularly experiences risky migrant crossings. Regional leader Juan Vivas has urgently appealed to Spain's central government for assistance, warning that the city cannot manage the humanitarian pressure alone. This event highlights growing concerns over child migration and inadequate support systems at EU border enclaves.
