Number 32 in Bach's St John Passion, 'Mein teurer Heiland' immediately follows the moment when Jesus dies on the cross for all humanity. The text presents a mixture of vernal optimism and almost disbelief in the redemption bought by Christ's death, similar to the words of the Roman centurion; 'surely this man was the son of God'.

Beginning with questions directed at Jesus about redemption and eternal life, the aria concludes with true faith and sure hope: 'for more I could not wish'.

The bright modality surrounded by dramatic and grief-stricken arias looks forward to the celebration of Easter Sunday and the Resurrection, and the beautiful interplay between the cello and baritone solos results in one of the finest and memorable movements in the John Passion. The reflection by the solo singer is supported by a growing chorus of believers at the foot of the cross, singing a chorale accompaniment to the same text, doubled softly by the strings.

My beloved Saviour, let me ask you,
since you have now been nailed to the cross
and you yourself have said: 'It is accomplished',
have I been set free from death?

Through your pain and death can I
inherit the kingdom of heaven?
Is this the redemption of the whole world?
You can indeed not speak for anguish;
but you bow your head
and silently say: 'yes'!

Jesus, you were dead,
and now live for ever,
in my final agony of death
may I turn nowhere else
but to you, who have redeemed me,
O my dear Lord,
give me only what you have won,
for more I could not wish!
