Popaquise is a rap artist from Sacramento, California. He found his love for music when he was 12 years old free-styling with his brother Gunna Husain, who is also his label mate at Black Market Records. While spending almost 3 years in San Quentin, he started writing and began to get very serious about his music. During that time he developed a style that he describes as a rap-singing vibe that is like the blues but with a rock star attitude. His music got him and some of the other inmates through the hard times of prison and they motivated him to dedicate his life to music and not come back.
“ I like the feeling I get when I make music,” states Popaquise, I want people to be able to feel my message, I really wanna tell my story about my struggles and the things I been through and how I came up out it" states Popaquise. While growing up in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood Popaquise faced many struggles. “A lotta people wouldn’t understand it, but it’s all I know, It’s not for everybody, a lot of people wouldn’t have made it out, where I come from, but it made me the man I am and I'm a powerful individual," stated Popaquise. After being taken away from his mother at 6 he lived with his Grandma. At age 11 he started living with his Mom again. During some of that time, he found himself homeless. That experience taught him not to take anything for granted and be appreciative for everything he is given.
Being homeless and doing time in prison were major obstacles he had to overcome but one of the biggest was being shot in the face when he was 18. That event shaped his outlook on life. “Life can be taken at any moment," states Popaquise, " I realized that its a lot that I hadn't got a chance to do yet.” After surviving that ordeal he is using music as a second chance at life that can get him out of his struggles. “I'm in love with music, I feel like I am music, I almost lost my life, its a blessing that I'm still here today," stated Popaquise. His latest single "Out The Mud" has received steady views on YouTube. Popaquise is currently working on his debut album “Broken Hearted” which will be released on Black Market Records.
