Marc Hunter was never built for the background. From the minute he set foot onstage, he pulled all eyes to him — not with gimmicks, but with sheer presence. He had something most frontmen spend their whole careers trying to fake. That combination of danger and charm. Of beauty and bite. He didn’t care what people expected. And when things got too safe, he’d light a match just to watch what would happen. Marc Hunter wasn’t just the face of Dragon. He was Dragon. And when he was good, the band soared. But when he unraveled — and he often did — everything came crashing down with him.
Marc Alexander Hunter was born in 1953 in Taumarunui, a sleepy town in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island. Music ran in the family. His older brother Todd was already a serious musician, playing bass and writing songs. But Marc was different. He didn’t just want to play music — he wanted to be it. He had a restlessness, even as a teenager, like he was allergic to standing still.
By his early 20s, he had a reputation — a gifted singer with raw charisma, a bit of a temper, and a love for excess that sometimes got the better of him. When Todd’s band Dragon was looking to shift gears in 1973, Marc was brought in as frontman.
It was the perfect storm.
Dragon had started as a prog-rock group in Auckland. Long solos, concept albums, complex arrangements. But with Marc at the front, that all began to change. The band got leaner. Sharper. More dangerous. He gave them a face, a sound, and a whole new energy.
In 1975, they relocated to Sydney, ready to take their shot. The first few years were hard. They weren’t instantly embraced. But they hustled — playing every pub that would have them, constantly evolving their sound. Then came the hits. “This Time” marked their arrival. “April Sun in Cuba” made them stars. And “Are You Old Enough?” pushed them into pop culture infamy — with lyrics that raised eyebrows and album sales at the same time.
By 1978, Dragon were one of the biggest bands in Australia. Their live shows were explosive. Their songs had hooks for days. And Marc — shirt open, sweating under the lights, howling into the mic — was the most talked-about frontman in the country. But success brought its own storm.
