Today, we're clearing up a major misconception in the world of Hindi cinema. Many believe that the legendary actresses Sadhana and Babita were biological sisters. The truth is, they were first cousins. Sadhana’s father, Shivram Shivdasani, was the elder brother of Babita’s father, the actor Hari Shivdasani. In a rare feat, Hari Shivdasani was one of the few male actors to have two daughters become successful heroines in the film industry.
The Shivdasani family's story began in Karachi before the partition of India. They were wealthy merchants who lost everything and moved to Mumbai in 1950. While Sadhana’s mother, Lali Devi, was a conservative Sindhi, Babita’s mother, Barbara, was a Christian. This religious divide would later cause friction, as Sadhana's mother initially disapproved of her marriage to R.K. Nayyar because he was not Sindhi.
A Family of Stars and Their Intertwined Destinies
Hari Shivdasani, a seasoned actor since the 1940s, was the creative force in the family. Inspired by Bengali actress Sadhana Bose, his brother Shivram named his only daughter Sadhana. Interestingly, actor Aftab Shivdasani is also a distant relative; Sadhana was his aunt. Few people know that Babita also had a younger sister, Meena, who stayed away from the film industry and is the owner of a company that manufactures machinery tools.
While Sadhana and Babita were close in the beginning, their relationship soured over time. Sadhana even supported Babita's relationship with Randhir Kapoor when everyone else was against it, but she was betrayed by Babita in return. Babita did not stand by Sadhana during her most difficult times, including her legal battle with Asha Bhosle over their shared apartment.
Sadhana’s life was a series of highs and lows. Her iconic 'Sadhana Cut' hairstyle, inspired by Audrey Hepburn, became a national trend. She made her debut in a chorus role in the song "Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh" from "Shree 420" (1955). At 15, she landed a small part in India's first Sindhi film, "Abana," where actress Sheila Ramani predicted she would become a star.
The Rise, Fall, and Legacy of Sadhana
Sadhana’s big break came in 1960 with "Love in Simla," where her Sadhana Cut and transformation from a simple girl to a glamorous heroine made her an overnight sensation. She married the film's director, R.K. Nayyar, in 1966, against her mother's wishes.
After her marriage, she briefly retired but returned to acting due to her husband's financial troubles. She delivered hits like "Inteqam" and "Ek Phool Do Mali" (both 1969). However, a serious thyroid disease affected her health and her famous eyes, and she suffered a miscarriage that left her childless. She later adopted a daughter named Rhea.
Sadhana's last film was "Geeta Mera Naam" (1974), which she also directed. She chose to retire from acting, wanting to be remembered as a young, glamorous heroine rather than an older character artist. After her husband's death from asthma in 1995, her life became shrouded in darkness and legal battles.
She passed away on December 25, 2015, at the age of 74. Despite her personal struggles, Sadhana's legacy as a style icon and a powerful actress remains. She chose to live and end her career on her own terms, forever immortalized as a star who was unapologetically herself.
