The Five Peaks Lookout house is located in the heart of Oregon's wine country, in the Chehalem Mountains. Situated in a location that offers expansive views of five different mountains (Jefferson, Hood, Adams, St. Helens, and Rainier), maximizing the landscape while maintaining an intimate connection with the sloping topography was a design challenge. However, with this challenge came the opportunity to create a magnificent solution for the site and the owners' vision. The result is a modern and inviting home that immerses residents in the Oregon mountain landscape.
The Five Peaks Lookout is organized in a bar-shaped layout that extends from south to north, with carved covered outdoor spaces within the volume of the bar. Most rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, and sliding doors are used in all east-facing rooms to blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior. The design honors the indoor-outdoor aesthetic, blending the interiors with the outdoors. One of the homeowners is an artist, so a carefully selected area of the house was designated as a well-lit art studio.
Naturalistic and contrasting materials such as concrete, wood, and steel are used throughout the residence, giving this minimalist home richness and an organic feel. Combined with the house's classic palette and its almost Japanese simplicity, the wide plank flooring highlights its clean geometric lines. A concrete fireplace molded in planks continues the linear rhythm, serving as a showcase for the owner's art collection.
The Five Peaks Lookout is a minimalist wonder, inviting nature inside. With its privileged location in Oregon's Wine Valley, the cantilevered house provides a magnificent panoramic view of the mountains.
