NEW Breakthrough in Microscopes Unlocks 2D World

Описание к видео NEW Breakthrough in Microscopes Unlocks 2D World

The video discusses a new microscope called the Quantum Twisting Microscope developed by scientists from the Weizmann Institute in Israel, which can solve a fundamental question in 2D materials - what happens when a twist is added to them. 2D materials were first discovered in 2004 with graphene, and they have different behavior when confined in a 2D sheet instead of a 3D volume, leading to changes in material qualities and exotic physics. By adding another 2D material on top of the first one, interactions can be controlled, leading to extremely useful technologies. The microscope allows continuous measurement of all angles, and it works electrically, passing a current from the bottom to the top and measuring how this changes with twist angle. This technique can be used to explore many materials and find interesting physics, such as the fundamental components of quantum computers. The technique is based on Moire patterns, which arise when two patterns are overlapped to create a new pattern, and the microscope does the twisting to create different materials, making it faster and more efficient than previous methods.
