In Episode 11 of Singai Tamizhan Recommends, I explore one of Singapore’s most colourful and culturally rich neighbourhoods — Little India. This is Part 1 of a complete Little India guide where I take you through the must-visit streets, iconic landmarks, hidden gems, shopping spots and famous food locations every tourist and local must experience.
We begin at Tekka Market, the heart of Little India. On Level 1, you’ll find one of Singapore’s most famous hawker centres packed with authentic Indian, Malay and local dishes. Then we head up to Level 2 where the retail market is filled with traditional clothing, jewellery, spices and household goods that truly capture the spirit of the community.
Next, we explore Buffalo Road, known for its vibrant flower garland shops, textile stores, Indian grocery shops and food stalls. This street is where culture, colour and tradition come alive.
We then walk into the Little India Arcade, one of the most iconic heritage buildings in the area, famous for Indian sweets, ornaments, souvenirs and traditional gifts. After that, we visit Campbell Lane, home to the legendary Jothi Store and many shops selling traditional Indian items.
The journey continues to the Indian Heritage Centre, where visitors can learn about the history and contributions of the Indian community in Singapore.
From there, we head to Dunlop Street, where you’ll find the famous Haniffa supermarket along with many vegetable shops and eateries. Then we explore Upper Dickson Road, known for some of Singapore’s most beloved vegetarian and Indian restaurants including Gokul, Madras New Woodlands and A2B.
Finally, we walk along the iconic Serangoon Road from Bukit Timah Road all the way to Veerasamy Road, ending the episode at the beautiful Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
This is only Part 1 — Part 2 will cover the rest of Little India, so stay tuned.
