This is a video of an interview with an Oyama doll craftsman. Oyama dolls are dolls that have been actively produced since the late Edo period and were modeled after actors and ukiyoe paintings. The fabric is sewn together with a sewing machine or by hand, the kimono is tailored as if actually worn by a person, and the dolls are dressed one by one by hand. Oyama Doll Craftsman, Traditional Craftsman Hosei Tsuda,began his career as a full-fledged doll maker in early 1955 under his father Hosei I. In 1995, he was certified as a Tokyo Metropolitan Traditional Craftsman by the Governor of Tokyo. He received the Prime Minister's Award in 1988 and the Minister of Education Award in 1991.
