Near Superior, AZ is a place called "Apache Leap". The legend around this place is that in the late 1800's a band of Apache warriors, with wives and children, were ambushed there by the US Army.
The warriors, seeing they had lost the fight, chose to leap their horses off a cliff instead of becoming prisoners to another people.
The legend continues that the tears shed by the wives and children of these braves, when they hit the ground, turned into black stones of obsidian. These stones can be found on this mountain and they are locally called "Apache Tears".

The Cattle were sleepin' as the soldiers approached
The horse hoves near silent while transcending the gulch
Pinion pines of mornin' towered over the land,
While the warriors of the mountain still slept on the sand,
The soldiers, sly as foxes, prepared in the breeze
Their win chester barrels, all hidin' in trees
And the camp of Apache, in the land of Pineal
Unprepared for the moment that would be their downfall!
The young US soldiers, looked out on death.
The cold morning air, brought life to each breath.
They motioned in silence. Agreed with a glance.
This moment, this morning, this time for death’s dance.
The barrels exploded. The bullets flew true
The Pinal Apache knew then what to do.
They fought man to man as the battle raged on
But knew all was lost before passage of dawn

Dark as night, and littered on the ground.
I know just what they are. They are memories or' the years.
Those Apache tears just waiting to be found.
Bodies of warriors, soon littered the camp.
The dirt n soil beneath them soon grew red n damp
And when braves remaining, each mounted their horse
They acted as one body and without remorse
And they rode as a heard, they rode to stampede!
Up past the soldiers! They rode at top speed!
Then past smoking barrels, with their warriors prayer
Each brave lept off the cliff and with their horse took to air!!!

And what happened next, you might choose to not believe,
Still I share with you a solemn truth and no heart to deceive
Alongside the falling braves, fell tears from children and from wives,
And fell next to their loved ones as braves bravely gave their lives!!!
The tears that fell beside them, turned dark among the stones!
They laid next to the bodies, and in time next to the bones.
And what sprang from children's heartbreak, and what grew from womens fears
Went from salty pain filled liquid, to BLACK APACHE TEARS!!!

Spilled in pain by babes and women, they've testified for years!
So walk with me among the mountain, past it's rage and past it's fears,
And the hear the song the mountain sings with black Apache tears!
