Great Indian Bustard (GIB)

The great Indian bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) or Indian bustard is a bustard occurring on the Indian subcontinent. It is a large bird with a horizontal body and long bare legs, and is among the heaviest of the flying birds. Once common on the dry grasslands and shrubland in India, as few as 150 individuals were estimated to survive as of 2018, reduced from an estimated 250 individuals in 2011. It is critically endangered due to hunting and habitat loss. It is protected under the Indian Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The Desert National Park, which is actually a part of the great Indian desert Thar desert, is a national park in the Indian state of Rajasthan, near the towns of Jaisalmer and Barmer. Desert national park is a natural habitat for hundreds of bird species including the great Indian Bustard and it is a magnet for the raptors. Vultures, falcons, eagles, buzzards, kestrels, merlins, hawks, all are found here. That is the reason Desert National Park is also known as land of raptors. Photographers and nature enthusiastic pay regular visits here for bird watching and wildlife photography. It is one of the largest national parks, covering an area of 3,162 km2 (1,221 sq mi) in the Thar Desert. Sand dunes form around 44% of the park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermedial areas and fixed dunes. It was gazetted in 1980. Despite a fragile ecosystem, it harbours an abundance of birdlife, both migratory and resident birds, including short-toed eagle, tawny eagle, spotted eagle, laggar falcon, kestrel, sand grouse and great Indian bustard. Desert National Park has a collection of fossils of animals and plants which are 180 million years old.
